We are constantly updating, refurbishing and added new components to our sanctuary. Please check back here regularly to check on the current status.
What is a sanctuary?
Our sanctuaries are permanent protected free flight homes where each species is kept in it’s own large aviary allowing them to flock as they do in the wild. The aviary is 1/2 covered to allow the birds to choose when they want shade or out of the rain for themselves. All birds are given a 6 month introductory to the flock to prevent fighting and injuries as well as become used to outside temperatures. No birds are handled except for when they ask for handling or when vet care is needed. All birds are provided daily fresh fruit/veggies/water and dry foods.
Sanctuary Birds
Feathered Family Exotic Bird Rescue only sends birds to sanctuary birds are that are wild, come from previous breeding situations, self mutilators where all vet aid/prevention has failed and birds that are deemed too dangerous to be put into a family home situation.
We limit the number of birds we take in so that every bird gets daily individual time with us and we get to know the kids very well before introducing them to new families.
If a bird has been in too many homes (6 to 10) we feel it’s in their best interest to also give them a chance to see if sanctuary life would appeal to them.
We only allow smaller birds in our sanctuary. Conures, Senegals, small Amazons, small Macaws and African Grays.
The Medium Aviary
Side view of medium sized aviary. To the left is the 3 sided shed that the birds have full access to. Size of this aviary is 8′Wx20′L. ON the far side of this aviary is the introductory aviary which is currently used for elderly birds and smaller birds such as Cockatiels and Parakeets. We are going to expand this aviary another 10′ in width and 20′ long running the length of the aviary/shed.

Some of the residents of the medium aviary.
Please note that we are aware of the particle board. The shed came built this way and we keep a very close eye for chewing and so far, very little damage has been done. We are planning on covering al of this with wire to prevent any problems.
The little aviary.
This was originally designed to be an introductory aviary adjoined to the medium aviary but instead ended up being an aviary for partially handicapped and elderly birds. Current residents are 2 brown throated Conures, one that has an ill-repaired broken wing, and some elderly Cockatiels as their gentle buddies. The picture shows that there are keets in there but they were adopted out. This picture was also taken before a roof was put on. Current size on this aviary is 9′L x 4′W. We are looking to expand that aviary so that the finished size will be 8′W x 20′ L by the end of the summer of 2008.
The Large Aviary
The large aviary, affectionately known as the Monsters Aviary is our newest aviary. Size is 14′ x 10′ and 10′ inside height. It also has a shed attached that allows the birds to go in and out as they choose. Currently the only residents are 2 Mitred Conures (also nicknamed the Monsters), 3 Ringneck Doves and 2 Bobwhite Quail.

All of our experiences so far running the sanctuary have been very positive. During the winter we put up heavy clear plastic on the outside to hold in heat and provide a wind break. Each aviary was also given a small amount of heat to prevent their drinking water from freezing.
We also work with 4 other 501(c)3 sanctuaries in WA.
Cockatoo Sanctuary in Bothell, WA
Bob Dawson’s Amazon and Macaw Sanctuary in Bellview, WA
Mollywood, central WA
Cockatiel Sanctuary in Spokane, WA
Recently we had a 10 x 14 building donated to us and there was a volunteer work day on the 17th when we got almost all of the flooring in. There will be another work day in 4 to 8 weeks. We hope to post the exact date for that sometime in the next few weeks. We will be providing food and drink on that day. Please come and help us!!
Sponser a sanctuary bird!
So many birds come in that cannot be adopted to family homes due to the danger to humans. Sanctuaries around the country are filling up with animals and frankly sanctuary should be reserved for animals that cannot be safe to humans. Because there are so many animals coming in we are starting up the sponser a sanctuary bird program. This is a perfect opportunity for you to own a bird without having a bird in your home. You are welcome to come and visit your bird and supply it treats and talk to it. Your sponsorship helps provide the high quality seed mixture we provide, daily fresh food, vitamins, upkeep of the building, cost of electricity during the winter months to keep it from truly freezing in the aviary and any necessary vet bills. You will be given a chance to choose what bird you wish to sponser and we will provide a history (if we know the history) of the bird and what your bird likes to do and play with, who his buddies are, etc.
Here are pictures of some of the birds currently available for sponsorship with more pictures coming soon.
Peach Fronted Conure we even have one missing his upper beak!
Unpictured birds currently are lovebirds, wild cockatiels, senegals, a red belly, 2 quakers (one naked, they are paired together and during cold weather we bring them inside to prevent harm or illness), green cheeked conures, mitred conures (2 of which cannot go into the outside aviaries as they are completely and permanently naked and one is blind)
